Tenerife makes up one of the Canary Islands and lies off the coast of West Africa. The mountainous island is dominated by Spain’s largest volcano, Mount Teide. For decades it has attracted tourists with it’s year-round good climate, mouthwatering cuisine, long stretches of white sandy beach and lively nightlife. If you happen to plan a road trip in Tenerife try planning your trip during Easter, you’ll be treated to colorful festivities of music, dance, and parades.

Best time to visit and weather

Thanks to its location, the climate here is good year-round. Imagine road trips in Tenerife. During the summer, days are typically long and hot, and make for perfect road tripping weather. If you like to swim, be sure to visit in August when the sea water is almost bath temperature. The outer months are cooler and more comfortable, and with fewer tourists to contend with, you may very well have the parks, beaches, and winding country roads all to yourself. The winter can be a little chilly, and the high mountains see some snow, but the restaurants and attractions are always open, and you can often find cheap car rental Tenerife and cheap accommodation in Tenerife around this time.

Rules on the Road

Speed limits are 120 kilometers per hour on the autovias. Alcohol intake is limited to 0.05% and there are some high fines and punishments for those who drive when over the limit.

Tenerife Road Trip Day 1 – La Orotava

When you arrive into Tenerife South Airport, you can pick up the keys for your car rental Canary Islands inside the terminal building. Drive out of the airport and head north for an hour to Mount Teide located in the center of the island. Though you won’t have time to hike the whole mountain, there is a cable car which drops you 200 meters away and you can climb the rest. From the summit at almost 4,000 meters above sea level, you can enjoy fabulous views across the island and down to the ocean. While you are in the park, spend some time exploring the Valley of Ucanca, an area made up of large swatches of volcanic lava.

Continue north to the pretty historic town of La Orotava and check into Hotel Alhambra, a boutique housed within an 18th century property. There are just 5 rooms available, and the hotel features a pool, the perfect way to cool off in the afternoon summer heat.

Finish off the day with dinner at Lucas Maes, a wonderful restaurant which serves up Canary specialties. The food here is some of the best on the island, and it can be enjoyed in a relaxed and informal setting, either on the terrace or in the beautiful surrounding gardens.
