Spain, officially known as Kingdom of Spain is – and has been for thousands of years – one of the cultural centers of Europe. Spain is located on the Iberian Peninsula in southwestern Europe. Its mainland is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea except for a small land boundary with Gibraltar.
The history of Portugal spans several thousand years and includes a period during the 15th and 16 centuries when the Portuguese established the first truly global empire which extended from Brazil in the West to Batavia (present day Jakarta) in the East.
